How do i boost my computer processing speed?

I have a deskTop computer with an intel Dual core processor and 1GB RAM. But i'm not satisfied with its speed because it takes time even to move files within the hard drive. Is there anything to do with the RAM? Or is there any other option to improve its speed? And also, does a dual core processor match with 1GB RAM?
